Our Dressmaking Quick Start Class is a one day class designed to teach you the basics of sewing your first dressmaking project – a pair of cosy, loose fitting, elasticated waist PJ bottoms!
What you’ll learn
- How to take accurate body measurements
- Understanding a dressmaking sewing pattern
- Making simple adjustments to a dressmaking pattern; lengthening/shortening etc
- How to pin and cut fabric neatly
- How to sew seams and keep an accurate seam allowance
- How to finish your seams
- Adding a waistband and elastic
We’ll cover all the skills and techniques you’ll need to leave with a fabulous finished pair of pyjama bottoms and get you started on your dressmaking journey!
Our sewing classes are relaxed and friendly, taking place at our beautiful studio at Holme Grange Craft Village in Wokingham, Berkshire. Students get to use our brand new digital Janome sewing machines and class sizes are capped to ensure everyone gets the time and attention they need.
We’re happy for children aged 11 + to attend this class as long as they’re comfortable with a sewing machine and are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also partaking in the class.
The class includes expert instruction, use of the machines, tools, threads, elastic, interfacing etc and you’ll keep a copy of the PJ pattern and your chosen dress pattern so you can make them again outside the class. Tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided!
What you need to bring
You will need 2.5m of light to medium cotton fabric for your pyjama bottoms. We recommend cotton poplin, cotton lawn and brushed cottons. We keep a supply of these in the studio for students to purchase, so please contact us if you’re not sure or take a look here and order online in advance.
You need to be comfortable threading a sewing machine, winding a bobbin and sewing in straight lines. Ideally you’ll have sewn a few projects such as cushions or tote bags, such as on our Sewing Machine 101 class or Introduction to Sewing course.
Once you have completed this course you could go on to complete our Introduction to Dressmaking classes to build on what you have learnt. If you would like to complete this course but are not yet at Level 3, why not try our Introduction to Sewing Course?
Our classes are non-refundable so please make sure you’ve checked your diary carefully and read our Class FAQs before booking. These also cover lots of other questions so please do read them!
Please note you’ll receive a confirmation email upon booking and you’ll also receive a reminder email the week before your class. If you don’t receive these, please check your junk/spam folder.
